Cancelling membership faqs

Can I re-join the Scheme after cancelling my membership?
If you want to re-join the Scheme you will need to speak to your employer, and they will tell you if this is possible. If it is, they will give you a form to fill in, and will arrange for pension contributions to be taken from the date you re-join.

I am approaching 40 years membership. Do I need to cancel my membership?
Membership used to be limited to 40 years at age 60 – so membership you built up after this didn’t count. But this limit has now been removed – so you can just carry on building up more membership (subject to the lifetime allowance).

Anyone who went over the old 40 year limit before April 2006 and was granted a ‘contributions holiday’ by their employer, should have had a letter from their employer explaining how the changes would affect them. If you need to know more, you should contact your employer’s Pensions Officer.

I want to draw my pension but still carry on working, so do I need to cancel my membership?

You don’t need to cancel your membership to do this, as the scheme rules include something called flexible retirement. This allows your employer to let you reduce your hours or your grade, then start drawing all or part of the benefits you have built up so far - so you get your pension and the reduced wage at the same time! (age restrictions apply)

There is a cost to your employer, so not all employers offer this option.

It is also likely that your pension benefits will be reduced because you are retiring early.

There are several pros and cons to this so if you are seriously interested in this then you should contact your employer’s Pensions Officer.
