Ill health FAQs

* What is the minimum period of membership I need to be entitled to ill health benefits?

Three months.

* When deciding the 3 tiers, what do you mean by “prospect of work”?

This means likely to be capable of paid employment of at least 30 hours a week for at least 12 months.

* Is there any impact if I am part time when I retire on ill health?

Any extra membership will be adjusted to reflect your part time hours on leaving.

* If I retire on ill health can I still swap pension for lump sum at the rate of £1 pension = £12 lump sum?

There is nothing we can see in the way the Regulations are written which would stop you doing this – even on tier 3.

Ill health FAQs

Protections for members who were in the LGPS before 1 April 2008
If you were a member before 1 April 2008, and retire on ill health before October 2008, the ‘old rules’ can apply in their entirety instead.

And on a longer term basis, if you were a member before 1 April 2008, and were 45 or over on this date, if you retire on tier 1 or tier 2, you will be given the extra membership from the ‘old rules’ if better (but the ‘prospect of work’ conditions still apply).
