This is a way of catching up on lost pension following a break, such as unpaid parental leave.
Except in the case of strike breaks, your employer will pay 2/3 of the cost. This makes sense, since they would have paid into the scheme anyway, had your normal contributions continued. Please see the Time off Work section for more information.
What's the cost?
Before you can work out the cost, you need to know how much pension you have lost as a result of the break! Your employer's pensions department or HR department should be able to help you with this.
Then you can get a rough idea of the cost by going on the APC online calculator . Please note: this is an external site - please do not click the get application button.
Taking things further
If you want to take things further, you need to apply to your employer. And remember, in cases where your employer will be paying towards the cost, there is a strict 30 day deadline to apply! Otherwise your employer is unlikely to pay towards it.
