about

Stewardship Code

Since 2011, Greater Manchester Pension Fund (GMPF) has been a voluntary signatory of the Financial Reporting Council’s (FRC) UK Stewardship Code, which is designed to set high stewardship standards for those investing money on behalf of UK savers and pensioners and enhance the quality of engagement between institutional investors and companies.

Stewardship is the responsible allocation, management and oversight of capital to create long term value for clients and beneficiaries leading to sustainable benefits for the economy, the environment and society. The current Code consists of 12 principles against which signatories are expected to demonstrate their Responsible Investment activities publicly for each calendar year. These 12 Principles are divided into four main categories (Purpose and Governance, Investment Approach, Engagement and Exercising Rights and Responsibilities).

In order to maintain its signatory status, asset owners such as GMPF, are required to demonstrate their stewardship activities on an annual basis. GMPF’s application to renew its signatory status was assessed by the FRC and was accepted in September 2023. This is an important external and independent validation of the Fund’s approach to its responsible investment activities. GMPF’s Stewardship Code statement is available at the following link:
